Hebrew University student Carmel Gat is still held hostage in Gaza
See below the speech by Hebrew University student Shay Dickmann, at the memorial service held by the University on November 7, 2023, marking one month since the Hamas attack. Shay is a 4th-year medical student and participated in the inaugural year of our Center’s Multiversitas program. Her cousin Carmel Gat, herself a student at the Hebrew University, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7 and is still being held in Gaza.
שמי שי. אני סטודנטית לרפואה בעברית ואת שנת הלימודים הנוכחית היינו אמורים לפתוח: בת דודה שלי, אחי ואני, מספסל הלימודים באוניבריסטה העברית. במקום להקשיב להרצאה או לעבוד על התזה, כרמל גת, בת הדודה שלי, נקרעה מאיתנו והיא נמצאת עכשיו בעזה, חטופה בידי חמאס.
כרמל נולדה וגדלה בקיבו בארי, הקיבוץ שסבינו היו ממקימיו, ובו אביה, אמה, אחיה, דודים ובני דודים התגוררו עד השבעה באוקטובר. באותה השבת, כרמל, אחיה ומשפחתו ביקרו את הוריהם בקיבוץ וחגגו ביחד את שמחת תורה.
ב - 6:30 בבוקר החלו מטחי רקטות, צבע אדום, והמשפחה כולה התכנסה בממ"ד.
כרמל הספיקה לקרוא סיפר לאחייניתה בממ"ד, לפני שהמחבלים חדרו אל הבית וחטפו ממנו את כרמל.
את תמונת החטיפה שלה ראה אביה, דוד שלי, שהסתתר בחדר השירותים, כשהוא צופה בבני המשפחה נלקחים אחד-אחד בידי מחבלים.
מאז הבוקר ההוא, לפני חודש, לא שמענו מכרמל.
אמה, כנרת, נלקחה גם כן, והובלה אזוקה על-ידי מחבלים. היום הוא יום הולדתה על ה-68, אותה לא זכתה לחגוג. כנרת נרצחה על אדמת הקיבוץ בשבעה באוקטובר. ייתכן שכרמל לא יודעת מה עלה בגורלה של אמה.
אחיה של כרמל, אשתו ובתם, נלקחו מהממ"ד גם הם, והוכנסו למכונית שנסעה לעבר עזה. בסמוך לגבול הם הצליחו להימלט מהמכונית. אחיה של כרמל רץ עם בתו תחת אש למקום מסתור, ועם רדת החשיכה נשא אותה בחזרה לבארי. השניים הגיעו למקום מבטחים והם כאן איתנו. עקבותיה של אשתו ירדן רומן נעלמו בניסיון ההימלטות, וככל הנראה גם היא, כמו כרמל, חטופה בימי חמאס.
ב-7 באוקטובר הצטרפתי בעל-כורחי לשתי משפחות, משפחת השכול ומשפחת החטופים והנעדרים.
קיבוץ בארי, הקיבוץ שגדלו בו אמי ואחיה, ובו בילינו שבתות וחגים כמשפחה, חטף מכה אנושה.
עשירית מתושביו נרצחו נחטפו או שעודם נעדרים.
אנשי המדעים המדוייקים - הנה הנתונים: מאה ה-7.10 ישנם 1400 נרצחים, ביניהם 86 חללים בני קיבוץ בארי.
אני משתתפת בכאבן של כל המשפחות שאיבדו את יקיריהן. הורים שכולים, יתומים, סבתות ששכלו את נכדיהן. בני ובנות זוג שנותרו לבדם, חברים. לבי איתכם. יחד נזכור את יקירנו בתקווה נשתקם ונבנה מציאות שאהובינו היו גאים בה.
נוסף על הנרצחים - ישנם כעת 29 חטופים בני קיבוץ בארי.
בשבילם, עוד לא מאוחר.
אנשי הרוח בינינו - הסיטואציה הבלתי אפשרית שאנחנו נמצאים בה מעלה שאלות מוסריות ומעמתת אותנו עם העמדות שהחזקנו בהן בימים רגועים מאלה.
אנשי מחקר אנחנו. כל שאלה ראוי שתישאל. תחת זאת, בואו נזכור, שבין זכויות האדם עומדת הזכות לחיים, לחירות ולבטחון אישי. שלושת עמודי הטווח האלו נשללו מיקירנו, אזרחי המדינה, וחובה עלינו לעשות כל שביכולתנו, כיחידים וכמדינה, על-מנת להשיב את החטופים בחייהם.
נאשי החקלאות - ששכלו טובים מבוגרי הפקולטה, החיטה צומחת שוב, ומי יהיה כאן לקצור?
לאנשי הרפואה אומר - 35 מהחטופים הם ילדים, ו-18 חטופים הם קשישים. הצעיר ביותר, כפיר, נחטף כשהוא בן 9 חודשים. כיום מלאו לו עשרה. הילדים והקשישים הם בני אוכלוסיה חלשה ומצבם מתדרדר. עזרו לנו ללחוץ לקבלת סיוע רפואי מציל חיים מהצלב האדום. החטופים עודם נמצאים בידי אנשי חמאס שעקרו אותם מבתיהם, רצחו את קרוביהם והתעללו בהם בדרכים שהעין אינה סובלת.
כרמל היא סטודנטית לתואר שני בריפוי בעיסוק כאן בעברית, ובימים כתיקונם עבדה בעמותת אשנב וסייעה לאנשים בעלי קשיים פסיכוליגיים וקוגניטיביים להשתלב בלימודים אוניברסיטאיים. כרמל קשורה בעבותות לאוניברסיטה שלנו, והיא אישה שוחרת שלום שמקבלת לחיקה אדם באשר הוא אדם.
אני תקווה שכולנו, הלומדים ומלמדים בירושלים, עיר שמכילה את כל המגזרים, הגזעים, הדתות, הצבעים והמינים, נלך בדרך שכרמל מאמינה בה. נבדיל בין אויב לחסל, וננהג בחברי הסגל, בסטודנטים ובעמיתים שלנו בכבוד הראוי להם. הפחד מובן, כולנו דרוכים, אבל בואו נישמר לבל נפרום את המארג הרגיש שיצרנו כאן בינינו בעמל.
כרמל, בוודאי רוצה בעך. אמה כנרת שנרצחה, היתה רוצה בכך גם כן.
ואנא, אנא עזרו לנו, משפחות החטופים, למנוע ממשפחת השכול להתרחב, וקראו איתנו לממשלה, למדינות העולם ולכל מי ששומע - להחזיר את החטופים בחיים.
אל תתנו להם לרדת מסדר היום.
עבר חודש, הותחושה עודנה שכולכם יוצאים מגדרכם כדי לעזור במה שניתן. האהדה שלכם ניכרת, ואנחנו מרגישים את התמיכה והעזרה יום-יום.
אני מאחלת לכולנו שנשוב לשגרה שפויה בהקדם האפשרי.
אבל אסור לנו לשכוח שבעזה ישנה 241 אזרחים. אסור לנו להתרגל. אסור לנו לזנוח ואסור לנו להפקיר. שנית.
בעוד חודש הלימודים באוניבריסטה צפויים להתחיל. כולי תקווה שכרמל תהיה כאן בינינו.

בכל כיתה שאתם נכנסים אליה, בכל פעם שאתם רואים כיסא ריק - זכרו. כאן יכלה לשבת כרמל, שיושבת עכשיו בעזה. וכמו שהיא יושבת שם עכשיו, אני, אתם, החברים שלכם - כל אחד מאיתנו יכול היה לשבת שם במקומה. אל תתנו למציאות הזאת להפוך להרגל.

My name is Shay. I am a medicine student at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and this current academic year was supposed to begin with my aunt, my cousin, my brother and myself as students at The Hebrew University. Instead of sitting in a lecture or working on her thesis, Carmel Gat, my cousin, has been torn away from us and is currently in Gaza, abducted by Hamas.
Carmel was born and raised in Kibbutz Be’eri, a Kibbutz of which our grandfather was one of the founders, and where her father and mother, brothers, uncles and cousins had lived until the 7th of October. On that Saturday, Carmel, her brother and his family visited their parents at the Kibbutz and celebrated the holiday of Simchat Torah together.
At 6:30 AM the rocket barrages began, and the entire family took shelter in the apartment’s Safe Room. Carmel managed to finish reading a story to her niece in this room before the terrorists infiltrated the house and abducted Carmel.
The scene of her kidnapping was seen by her father, my uncle. He was hiding in the bathroom, witnessing his family members taken one by one by the terrorists. Since that morning, a month ago, we haven’t heard from Carmel.
Her mother, Kinneret, was abducted as well, and was taken, hands bound, by the terrorists. Today is her 68th birthday, which she did not get a chance to celebrate. Kinneret was murdered on the grounds of Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7th. It is likely that Carmel does not know about her mother’s fate.
Carmel’s brother, his wife and their daughter were taken from the Safe Room as well, and were put in a car that set off to Gaza. Near the border they managed to escape from the car. Carmel’s brother ran under fire with his daughter to a hiding place, and hid her until darkness fell. At night, he carried his daughter back to Be’eri. The two of them made it to safety and they are here with us. Traces of his wife, Yarden Roman, were lost in the attempted escape, and it’s likely that she, like Carmel, has been abducted by Hamas.
On October 7th I was forced to belong to two families, the family of the bereaved and the family of the abducted.
Kibbutz Be’eri, the Kibbutz where my mother and her brothers grew up, and where we spent time as a family on Saturdays and holidays, received a fatal blow.
A tenth of its inhabitants were murdered, abducted or are still unaccounted for.
Men and women of the exact sciences, here are the figures: Since October 7th there have been 1,400 Israelis murdered, among them 86 are the fallen of Kibbutz Be’eri.
I share the pain of all the families that lost their loved ones. Bereaved parents, orphans, grandmothers who lost their grandchildren. Men and women leכא without their significant other, without their friends. My heart is with you. Together we will remember our loved ones, and hopefully we will recover and build a reality of which they would have been proud.
In addition to those murdered, there are now 29 people from Kibbutz Be’eri that had been abducted.
For them, it is not yet too late.
Men and women form the Humanities among us, the impossible situation that we are currently dealing with raises ethical questions and confronts us with the positions we held during calmer days than these.
We are people of inquiry and research. All questions are worth being asked. However, let us remember that among the human rights are the right to life, liberty and security of person. These three principles were shattered for our loved ones, citizens of this country, and we are obliged to do all we can, as individuals and as a state, to return all hostages alive.
Men and women of Agriculture, who lost the best among the graduates of the faculty, the wheat shall grow again, but who will be here to harvest?
To the men and women of medicine I will say, 35 of the hostages are children, and 18 are elderly. The youngest, Kfir, was abducted when he was 9 months old. Today, he is 10 months old. The children and the elderly are the vulnerable members of society, and their condition is deteriorating. Help us apply pressure to obtain for them lifesaving medical care from the Red Cross. The hostages are still in the hands of members of Hamas that wrenched them from their homes, murdered their relatives and abused them in ways that cannot be suffered.
Carmel is a master’s degree student in Occupational Therapy here at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and before this atrocity she had been working for Eshnav association assisting people with psychological and cognitive difficulties to study within the University. Carmel is firmly connected to our University, and she is a peace loving woman who is accepting of every person.
I hope that all of us, who study and teach in Jerusalem, a city that contains all the sectors of society, races, religions, colors and genders, will walk the path that Carmel believes in. We shall differentiate a friend from a foe, and treat our members of faculty, students and colleagues with the respect they deserve. The fear is understandable, we are all on edge, but let us be careful lest we unravel the delicate fabric of society we have weaved together so laboriously.
Carmel certainly would want this. Her mother Kinneret who was murdered, would have wanted this as well.
And please, please help us, the families of the abducted, to minimize the number of bereaved, and with us call upon the government, the countries of the world and all those who can hear us – return the hostages alive.
Do not let them be forgotten.
It has been a month, and it still feels like everyone is going far out of their way to help with what is possible. Your sympathy is vast, and we feel the support and help every day.
I wish for all of us to return to a sane routine as soon as possible. But we must not forget that there are 241 Israeli citizens in Gaza. We must not become accustomed to it. We must not neglect and we must not abandon. Not again.
In a month’s time the academic year is set to begin. I hope very much that Carmel will be here with us then. But until that happens-In every classroom you enter, every time you see an empty seat, remember. This is where Carmel could have sat, but now she is sitting in Gaza. And just as she is sitting there now, Myself, you, your friends, any single one of us could have been sitting there instead of her. Do not let this reality become something we are accustomed to.
