In recent years, children and youth worldwide have faced an increasingly complex landscape of challenges that demand urgent attention from the international community. Contemporary global developments – including armed conflicts, democratic backsliding, ongoing health crises, rapid technological transformation, and climate change – create intersecting vulnerabilities that significantly impact children’s rights, development, and well-being.

Contemporary global wars and conflicts — including the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza that erupted following the October 7th attack, the ongoing war in Ukraine, regional confrontations in the Middle East, and armed struggles in various parts of Africa, Asia, and other regions — exemplify how modern crises disproportionately impact children and adolescents. These wars and conflicts result in devastating consequences for young people on all sides, affecting their fundamental rights, development, and well-being. As we convened this conference at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, we were particularly mindful of the ongoing regional wars and their impact on children, while recognizing that this reality, alongside other global conflicts and crises, underscores the critical importance of child-centered research that addresses the complex experiences of children and their needs and rights in unstable contexts worldwide.

The 2nd Annual International Conference of the Child and Youth Rights Program (ChYRP) at the Minerva Center for Human Rights in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law focused on these issues. The Conference examined how children and youth navigate unprecedented global disruptions through a child-focused, rights-based lens. The Conference was interdisciplinary, bringing together international scholars from law, social work, sociology, psychology, public health, anthropology, education, criminology, and public policy to discuss cutting-edge research.
