Transitional Justice and Global Politics: International and Global Perspectives (November 29)
The Minerva Center for Human Rights and Fried-Gal Transitional Justice Program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law, in cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland in Israel, held an international symposium on the interplay between global politics and transitional justice. The symposium brought together local and international scholars and practitioners engaged in transitional justice initiatives and research for an extremely fruitful day of discussions, mapping and critically evaluating the external political conditions under which transitional justice interventions are considered or attempted in different states. The discussions were chaired by Prof. Yuval Shany, Co-Director of the Transitional Justice Program, and included contributions from His Excellency Jean-Daniel Ruch, Ambassador of Switzerland to Israel.

Recent Developments in International Humanitarian Law and Detention Law and Practice (November 12-13)
The Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) held their 13th annual joint conference on International Humanitarian Law, which focused on detention law and practice. 32 scholars and practitioners from around the world participated in the conference panels.

Unpacking Economic and Social Rights: International and Comparative Dimensions (Göttingen, November 9)
The 2-day international conference, held at the University of Göttingen, Germany, was jointly organized by the University of Göttingen’s Institute of International and European Law and the Hebrew University’s Minerva Center for Human Rights. The conference was the culmination of a joint project on "Unpacking Economic and Social Rights” of Göttingen University and the Minerva Center, led by Prof. Andreas Paulus (Justice of the German Federal Constitutional Court) and Prof. Tomer Broude (Academic Director of the Minerva Center). The conference was funded by the Thyssen Foundation and will lead to a special issue of the Göttingen Journal of International Law on the topics discussed.
Prof. Daphna Golan: Hope on the Campus Margins – Israeli and Palestinian Students in Jerusalem (October 10)
The Minerva Center held a symposium in honor of the publication of Prof. Daphna Golan's new book: “Hope on the Campus Margins – Israeli and Palestinian Students in Jerusalem” (Resling. in Hebrew). The book looks at Palestinian neighborhoods near the Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus, the absence of political discourse at Israeli universities, and the huge potential for meaningful interaction between Israeli and Palestinian students, based on Prof. Golan's experience directing the Minerva Center's Human Rights Fellows Program over the last two decades. Prof. Michael Karayanni, Dean of the Hebrew University's Faculty of Law, opened the event. Four former students - Dr. Devorah Manekin, Ms. Asmahan Simri, Ms. Moran Chen Spitzer and Adv. Alaa Mahajna - spoke about their experiences in the program and its impact on them, followed by remarks by Prof. Golan.

Prof. Joe Cannataci on Privacy, Personality and Progress on Surveillance (June 13)
The Minerva Center and its "Human Rights under Pressure" Joint PhD Program with Freie Universität Berlin, together with the Cyber Security Research Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law, hosted a lecture and discussion with Prof. Joe Cannataci, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy.

Steven Wise on Unlocking the Cage: Are Animals Legal Persons? (April 10)
The Minerva Center hosted a lecture and discussion with Adv. Steven M. Wise, founder of The Nonhuman Rights Project and Prof. Alon Harel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. NhRP is the only civil rights organization in the United States working through litigation, public policy advocacy, and education to secure legally recognized fundamental rights for nonhuman animals.

Dr. Yael Berda: Living Emergency: Israel’s Permit Regime in the Occupied West Bank (March 19)
The Minerva Center for Human Rights and its international interdisciplinary PhD program "Human Rights under Pressure" hosted a symposium at the Hebrew University on Dr. Yael Berda's new book, "Living Emergency: Israel's Permit Regime in the Occupied West Bank" (Stanford University Press). Speakers included the author herself; Prof. Hillel Cohen, Director of the Cherrick Center for the Study of Zionism; Prof. Michal Frankel, Head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology; Ms. Amira Hass, journalist; and Prof. Tomer Broude, Academic Director of the Minerva Center.

HR-UP Winter Research Workshop (February 20-21)
The Minerva Center’s multidisciplinary PhD Program "Human Rights Under Pressure" with Freie Universität Berlin concluded the winter semester with a 2-day joint Jerusalem-Berlin research workshop, which encouraged a reflective cross-cutting discussion on the meaning of "human rights scholarship" as a distinct endeavor, the contemporary challenges of carrying it out, and the dilemmas involved in it for human rights researchers. Guest speakers included Kieran McEvoy of Queen’s University Belfast, Yofi Tirosh of Sapir College in Israel, Ivana Jelic of the University of Montenegro and the UN Human Rights Committee, Moritz Baumgärtel of Utrecht University, Wenzel Michalski of Human Rights Watch Germany, and Pawel Machcewicz of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Academic Coordinator of the workshop was Dr. Ron Dudai of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Higher Walls: The Challenging Transition of East-Germany since 1990 (January 17)
The Minerva Center for Human Rights and the Fried-Gal Transitional Justice Program hosted a symposium on the transition of East Germany following the 1990 reunification. Guest speakers included Amb. Clemens von Gotze, Germany's Ambassador to Israel; Dr. Anna Kaminsky, Director of the German Federal Foundation for the reappraisal of the communist dictatorship; Professors Tomer Broude and Manuela Consonni of the Hebrew University; and Dr. Anja Mihr, DAAD visiting lecturer.

The Psychology of International Law (January 10-11)
The European Society of International Law in association with the Hebrew University's Leonard Davis Institute for International Relations, Faculty of Law, Minerva Center for Human Rights and others, hosted a conference with scholars from different disciplines to converse on the methodological foundation and international legal theory, as well as issue areas and specific applications, pertaining to the psychology of international law. This included discussions on the use of behavioral economics and behavioral analysis as well as political psychology of international law and reviewing issues such as public opinion on international law and its effects, existing bias effects in military investigations, human rights law and the 'debiasing' of international economic law.
