The Moral Status of Discrimination and its Legal Implications (December 14-16)
The three-day international conference, hosted by the Minerva Center, explored the question of why discrimination is wrong and its relation to other normative concepts such as well-being, efficiency, equality, responsibility, distributive justice, retributive justice, corrective justice, autonomy, dignity, human rights and affirmative action. The conference also discussed when discrimination is wrong; and how discrimination should be legally prohibited or otherwise regulated.

International Human Rights Day (December 12)
The EU Delegation in Israel co-hosted with the Minerva Center an event at the Hebrew University marking International Human Rights Day, with the participation of the President of Hebrew University and senior EU officials. The keynote talk, entitled “The Global Retreat from Reality: What the Assault on Freedom of Expression Means for Democracy’s Future” - was given by Prof David Kaye of the University of California, Irvine, who currently serves as UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression.

Contemporary Challenges in International Humanitarian Law (November 28-29)
The 11th annual Minerva / ICRC conference on international humanitarian law (IHL) included two full days of discussions on current challenges of IHL, presented by leading scholars and practitioners in the field. Prof. Francoise Hampson of the University of Essex presented the conference keynote address.

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa (November 15)
The event included a film screening of the movie “Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South” about the lawyer, writer, and freedom fighter during the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Ron Dudai (Martin Buber Society of Fellows, Hebrew University in Jerusalem), Ms. Abby Ginzberg (the film’s director), and Dr. Alon Liel (Former Ambassador to South Africa and Director General of the Israel Foreign Ministry).

Prof. Patrick Macklem on the Sovereignty of Human Rights (November 7)
This symposium included a discussion of Prof. Patrick Macklem's theory of the role of international human rights law as counteracting the adverse consequences of sovereignty because of international law, presented in his new book, "The Sovereignty of Human Rights,” especially regarding minority rights, labor rights, self-determination and the right to development.

The Politics of Commemorations in Divided Societies (May 16)
The Minerva Center hosted a symposium on the politics of commemoration, focusing on focusing on Northern Ireland and Israel. Speakers included Prof. Pierre Hazan (Special Advisor for Transitional Justice at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue), Dr. Kris Brown (Transitional Justice Institution, Ulster University) and Dr. Ron Dudai (Martin Buber Fellow, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem). Dr. Renana Keydar (Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Minerva Center’s Human Rights under Pressure Research Program) chaired the Symposium.

Prof. Schirim Amir-Moazami, from the Institute of Islamic Studies and Berlin Graduate School of Muslim Cultures and Societes at the Freie Universität Berlin, presented a lecture on the effects of liberal-secular power on the issue of male circumcision in Germany.
